My Korean DVDs

10th October 2009

This is the list of the DVDs I own.  It will be updated regularly as I buy more. Previously, the list contained my VHS tapes as well. However, I recently donated those to the film department at Woosuk University. It was a hard decision made somewhat easier since I no longer have a VHS player. At least I know where they are and that I can watch the whenever I need to reference them.

    Hi Tom,

it’s good to have you back! I’m glad that you could save some of your old reviews.

I see you already got “Yalkae, A Joker in High School” (1976) – I did so as well.

I’m not sure if you saw it, but “The Eternal Empire” (1995) was re-released on DVD with English subtitles. The video quality was not the best, sadly and sometimes the subtitles were missing. But I’m happy that I could see the film, though.

Next week, KOFA will release “The Shower” (1978) on DVD with English subtitles. Next up is the Yoo Hyun-mok Collection in November with 4 films and surprisingly, “The Road to Sampo” (1975) will also be released in December. I was very happy to hear that!!

  2. Tom Says:

That is great news about Yoo Hyun-mok! I can’t wait see that collection. I have several dvds on reserve for when they are released, but since I already have an earlier version of The Shower, I will probably skip the new one even though it is subtitled.

It’s good to hear from you again!

  3. Lisa Says:

Impressive list! I found your site while searching for “Hand of Destiny”… which is on your list. I haven’t been able to find a copy online, do you have any suggestions of where I can buy this DVD? Thank you!

  4. Tom Says:

Seoul Selection carries it but does not have any in stock at the moment. http://www.seoulselection.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=872&category_id=28&keyword=fate&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53

BUT, it is worth contacting them directly through email. They are very helpful and will probably locate a copy for you. Good Luck!

  5. Lisa Says:

Thanks! That’s a great resource, and I will keep it bookmarked. Can I ask you another question? I am looking for films set in Seoul (by Korean directors) for a class… do you have any suggestions of films which really feature the urban landscape? I was hoping to use Hand of Destiny as a Asian noir film set in Seoul. But I’m not very knowledgeable about Korean film, and I’ve yet to find anyone who is. But you certainly seem to be! It doesn’t have to Asian noir. The film could be about anything, but give a palpable sense of the city as an aspect of the film. If you have any suggestions, I would be very grateful.
