This week we have two Korean films opening this week. The first trailer if for the film Taste of Money..and what a trailer it is. This film has definitely caught my interest for the opulence of the sets. But not only that, the cast is quite good with such talents as Kim Kang-woo, Baek Yoon-shik, Yoon Yeo-jeong and Kim Hyo-jin, and the director is Im Sang-soo.
The other Korean film is All About My Wife, directed by Min Gyu-dong and starring Im Soo-jeong and Lee Seon-gyun.
For me, the choice is easy as to which movie I will see…
There are nine other movies that will be opening in theaters this week as well: First Grader (uk), Eep (netherlands), Melancholia (denmark), Cold Light of Day (us), Francesco and the Pope (germany), The Future (germany), Trash (spain), Erotibot (Japan), The Raid (indonesia)
Out of the sixteen movies opening this coming Thursday, two of them are Korean films, Strangers and Dure Sori Story.
Strangers is directed by Choi Yong-seok and stars Han Soo-yeon and Yeo Hyeon-soo. The trailer below has peaked my interest and it seems to be my style of film. While I do not expect it to impact the box office, it looks like my style film and I really want to see it.
Dure Sori Story seems to have a plot similar to any number of movies where a group of mismatched students come together to eventually form a successful music group (Korean films Zzang and Spring Blossoms jumo to mind…) the traditional nature of the music my make this appealing, especially to those unfamilar with that style of song.
As mentioned above, there are 14 other movies opening this week.. and a surprising number of these come from the Netherlands. Here’s what else will be in theaters: Saint (netherlands), Venus in Furs (netherlands), Lulu (netherlands), Meat (netherlands), Letters to Father Jacob (finland), The Seventh Seal (sweden), Micmacs (fr), Assault (fr), Dangerous Method (uk), The Divide (us/germany), Colorful (japan), Usagi Drop (japan) and Dark Shadows (us), and Like Dandelion Dust (us)
Two new Korean films will be opening this week.
The first is the movie, As One, starring Ha Ji-won and Bae Doo-na as pro table tennis players. It has a good chance of competing well with the Avengers which was the number one movie last weekend.
The other movie is the film Just Friends, an indie film produced back in 2010 but receiving a general release now. It is directed by Ahn Cheol-ho and features Oh Yeon-seo and Lee Yeong-hoon. The trailer is not on Youtube, but I did find one on Naver that, unfortunately, I am unable t embed here. Instead, if you follow the link, it will take you to the trailer. http://movie.naver.com/movie/bi/mi/mediaView.nhn?mid=17655
Other movies opening this week are: The True Story of Puss’n Boots (fr), This Must be the Place (fr/it), Sleeping Beauty (fr), Fermat’s Room (sp), The Woodsman and the Rain (jp), The Lorax (us), Mirror, Mirror (us), Monster (us)
There will be three Korean movies opening this week, two films and a documentary. The first film, from the director of Happy End and starring Park Hae-il and Kim Ko-eun, looks promising. It is called Eungyo. Here is the trailer:
Spring, Snow also looks very good but is a definite tear-jerker. A sometimes under-appreciated, aging mother learns that she has a disease may shortly claim her life.
The documentary is called Red Maria which examines the lives of women across borders, nationalities and social status and shows are they are interconnected without ever having met
The first two films look like they might have potential to do well in the box office, but they have some impressive competition in the form of the Avengers (us) which is being heavily advertised on television and is a likely candidate to come out on top. Other films being released this week are Titanic II (us), Crayon Shin-Chan (jp), Armadillo (denmark), Cat in Paris (fr) and Turn Me On, Goddammit (norway)
It seems like a flood of new movies are listed as opening in theaters this coming Thursday. However, among them there are only 2 Korean films. Both are smaller releases and one is a documentary so neither is likely to have a strong impact on the box office charts. The first trailer below is from the film DUET directed by Lee Sang-bin and starring Ko Ah-seong with James Page.
The documentary is FOREST OF TIME directed by one of my favorite directors Song Il-gon. It stars Park Yong-woo and Rina Takagi.
Other movies opening are: The Ides of March (us), Picture Me: A Model’s Diary (us), Crazy Horse (us), The Box (us), Gods Own Child (in), The Robot (in), Dangerous Experience (jp), Broken Blade (jp), Once In A Blue Moon (jp), Jump Ashin! (taiwan), Les Regrets (fr), and Heartbreaker (fr)
We have ten new movies opening this week, two from Korea. First we have The Scent, a new crime thriller from Director Kim Hyeong-joon and which stars Park Hee-soon and Park Shi-yeon.
We also have the sci-fi omnibus offering various end-of-the-world senarios from directors Kim Ji-woon and Im Pil-seong. (The original trailer shows a space rock rather than the eight-ball in the newer trailers. I wonder what was the reason for the change was…)
Eight other movies are opening. We have Battle in Heaven (belgium), Queen of Hearts (france), Ways to Live Forever (england) and Hamilton: In the Interest of the Nation (sweden). From the USA we have Better Life, Beauty and the Beast 3D, Battleship and Beaver
There is only one Korean movie opening in theaters this week and, being a documentary, it is likely to have an extremely limited release. The name of the movie is Mother and it is directed by Tae Joon-shik and features Lee So-san and Jeon Tae-sam. Perhaps you were lucky enough to have seen the excellent Korean film A Single Spark based on the short life of Jeon Tae-il? Mother, follows Jeon’s mother after his dramatic death for the cause of improved conditi0ns for workers.
The following is a list of other films opening this weekend. From Europe: On Tour (fr), Free Student (fr), The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (sweden). From Asia: Starry, Starry Night (ch), Tekken Blood Vengeance (jp). From North America: Titanic 3D (us), Conan the Barbarian (us), Hunger Game (us)
There will be nine movies opening in theaters this week… but only one of them is Korean-made. That is Over My Dead Body, a crime/thriller starring Lee Beom-soo, Kim Ok-bin and Ryu Seung-beom.
The other films being released this week? Well, the film that is attracting the most attention… primarily for special effects (I don’t think anyone is expecting much from the story) is Wrath of the Titans (us). Also from the USA are Fortress, War Inc., and Dead and Gone. We have three films from Europe this week: A L’aventure (fr), Tyrannosaur (uk) and When We Leave (de). The ninth film is from Japan and is called Seichi.
This week we have three new Korean films opening on the big screen.
The first is the film Architecture 101 starring Uhm Tae-woong, Han Ga-in and Lee Je-hoon. It is the story of two college classmates who meet again years after graduation and fall in love all over again. Oh– ingnore the title Introduction to Architecture that the Youtube poster added.. the official title is Architecture 101…
The movie I am more interested in is Hand In Hand starring Joo Hyeon, Ye Soo-jeong, and Chae Min-hee in which an elderly couple are fast approaching their end of their comfortable and peaceful love and life together.
Finally there is a documentary entitled Planet of Snail about a man who became blind and deaf as a child after suffering from a high fever. The trailer has English subtitles from the film’s release at international film festivals.
These films will be up against the following movies from overseas. From Asia: Let the Bullets Fly (china), Shinobido (Japan) and Nude (japan). From Europe: Autumn Sonata (sweden), The Girl Who Played with Fire (sweden), Space Dogs 3D (russia) and Untouchable (france). From North America: Battle Force (usa), Contraband (usa) and Kill Switch (canada)
This coming week, we have four new Korean films opening this week. The first is Gabi, a film dramatizing the “Coffee Pot Plot” … an assassination attempt on the life of His Majesty King Gojong in 1897… (The trailer says 1896, but the murder attempt is covered in the Independent and talks place the following year).
One of my favorite directors returns with a new movie this week. Jeon Soo-il eighth film is Pink, centered on a bar on the coast and its patrons.
Home Sweet Home is directed by Moon Shi-hyeon and stars Kim Yeong-hoon and Yoo Ae-kyeong.
Also returning to the big screen this week is actor Bong Tae-gyu in Byeon Seong-hyeon’s new film Youth Groove.
Other movies opening this week include The Vow, Freerunner, Seeking Justice and Chronicle from the USA, Flying Sword and Dragon Gate and 1911 from China, and My Back Page and Keibetsu from Japan.
